Hi Jules,

Below is the link to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton…this is where the DC-3 comes from. The plane was here for the Capital Wings and Wheels show at the Aviation Museum in Ottawa. I think I sent you the link for the event, right?

Members had a chance to ride on this DC-3. I chose the last of 3 flights. It seats 10 people and they had 6 seats that were empty! So…since it was the end of the show, the organizers and some volunteers of the Wartime Heritage Museum decided to hop on. Let’s just say that it was a fun flight!

This particular plane was built in 1939 and if you totaled the number of hours it logged, it would equal flying 9 years straight! 

Anyway, once the seatbelt sign was turned off, one of the organizers invited me into the flight deck!!! Can you believe it! It is really beautiful and I stood there in awe! The pilots were talking to me but gosh it was hard to hear!  I thought of that scene in the Bond movie Quantum of Solace when 007 was in a DC-3 with “Chickee Poo“ (forget her name…sorry, I was just paying attention to the plane…and Daniel Craig! Ha ha.) In the movie, they were flying and chatting along and there is NO background noise making things hard to hear. Movie—does not equal—reality!

Anyway, after our ½ hour flight around pretty downtown Ottawa, we landed and I got to hang around with “the guys” and listen to their stories! I loved that part! These men have so many interesting memories and they are proud to tell them.

I am still on cloud 9! I got to experience a piece of history…I am very thankful for that opportunity. I have wonderful pictures, video, and friendships to remind me.

The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum is having an Airshow this Saturday. I wish it wasn’t over 6 hours away for me! Darn.

This Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on where you live, sky-watchers around the world will be able to see a cosmic spectacle known as a transit of Venus. The events are so rare that only six Venus transits have been observed since the invention of the telescope more than 400 years ago. (See a telescope time line.)
Transits happen when a planet crosses between Earth and the sun. Only Mercury and Venus, which are closer to the sun than Earth, can undergo this unusual alignment.
The last Venus transit was in 2004—above, the planet glides across the rising sun in a picture taken during the event from the North Carolina coastline. After 2012, we won't see another transit of Venus until 2117.

"People watching this event through some form of safe solar viewer will see the small, dark silhouette of Venus crossing the sun's face over the course of about six hours," said Jay Pasachoff, an astronomer at Williams College in Massachusetts. (Read a Q&A with Pasachoff about Venus transits.)

An observer in Colorado stands framed by a partial solar eclipse in a picture taken last week and submitted to National Geographic's My Shot.
Solar eclipses happen when the moon lines up between Earth and the sun. But in the most recent case, known as an annular eclipse, the dark moon's apparent diameter was smaller than the visible disk of the sun, so that it left a ring—or annulus—of fiery light around the edges.
The event was the first annular eclipse seen from the mainland United States since 1994.

Seen from one of Japan's MTSAT meteorological satellites, the shadow of the moon darkens part of the North Pacific during the annular solar eclipse last Sunday and Monday. Despite the diminutive shadow shown, the moon is actually a little bigger than a quarter the size of Earth.

An Allied Air Cargo Boeing 727-200 freighter on behalf of DHL Aviation Africa, registration 5N-BJN performing flight DHV-3 from Lagos (Nigeria) to Accra (Ghana) with 4 crew, was on approach to Kotoka International Airport but overran runway 21 upon landing and came to rest near the El Wak Sports Stadium at the Hajj village at about 19:10L (19:10Z) basically in one piece. The 4 crew were taken to a local hospital but remained unhurt. 12 people on the ground, 11 occupants of a Benz 207 Bus and a soldier riding a bike along the road, have been killed, a number of injured were taken to a hospital. The aircraft received substantial damage beyond repair, all gear collapsed, the right wing was damaged due to impact with the bus, the tail plane separated from the aircraft and the tail fractured including fractures of the pressure vessel.
