The text below is what Giulia wrote...describing her "Lucky Day in History"......Yesterday
(6/9/2012)
and also......... included some of the Awesome pictures she took........Giulia...you do us Aviation Geeks Proud!!!!!!!!!!........

Hi Jules,

Below is the link to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton…this is where the DC-3 comes from. The plane was here for the Capital Wings and Wheels show at the Aviation Museum in Ottawa. I think I sent you the link for the event, right?

Members had a chance to ride on this DC-3. I chose the last of 3 flights. It seats 10 people and they had 6 seats that were empty! So…since it was the end of the show, the organizers and some volunteers of the Wartime Heritage Museum decided to hop on. Let’s just say that it was a fun flight!

This particular plane was built in 1939 and if you totaled the number of hours it logged, it would equal flying 9 years straight!

Anyway, once the seatbelt sign was turned off, one of the organizers invited me into the flight deck!!! Can you believe it! It is really beautiful and I stood there in awe! The pilots were talking to me but gosh it was hard to hear! I thought of that scene in the Bond movie Quantum of Solace when 007 was in a DC-3 with “Chickee Poo“ (forget her name…sorry, I was just paying attention to the plane…and Daniel Craig! Ha ha.) In the movie, they were flying and chatting along and there is NO background noise making things hard to hear. Movie—does not equal—reality!

Anyway, after our ½ hour flight around pretty downtown Ottawa, we landed and I got to hang around with “the guys” and listen to their stories! I loved that part! These men have so many interesting memories and they are proud to tell them.

I am still on cloud 9! I got to experience a piece of history…I am very thankful for that opportunity. I have wonderful pictures, video, and friendships to remind me.

The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum is having an Airshow this Saturday. I wish it wasn’t over 6 hours away for me! Darn.

Enjoy the pics and videos………..know that you were in my heart the whole time and I kept saying to myself—“Imagine if Jules was here!!!!”

Love you,

Giulia

Bye Bye Giulia........GREAT JOB!!!!!!

Wow, great experience, Giulia!

Cappy's actually jealous--DC-3 is one of my Top 5 Favorites that I wish I could fly!

When I was flying in the Caribbean there were quite a few there, and I was sorta hoping to get hired on to fly one...but alas, career went elsewhere.... :-/

Hey GG!

What a fantastic day - thanks for sharing..

Great pics but no substitute for the sounds and smell that goes along with an experience such as this!

Could you see your house?? :)

All the best!

Morning Jules!

Ha ha...Thank you for putting this post together...I got so many texts while I was sleeping so when I woke up, I knew you had a bit of a tough time! :)

I will resend the pics if you want...don't know why you can't enlarge them.

Thanks, Cappy and Dave! I kept trying to absorb every little detail of the experience. The best part is when you don't plan anything and you just let yourself enjoy...special moments pop up that could never been planned!

Cappy, if you want, I can call "my boys" and see if I can get you a ride. ;)
Dave, couldn't see my house (I live more south and west of downtown). ;)

Jules...I will send you the link for the landing and me sneaking into the flightdeck. Still gotta upload them.

xo

Whaow Giulia, that is awesome! Luck you!

Great pictures! Kinda like 'Ice Pilots' ! No fancy flight deck but a real cockpit haha.

Looking forward to landing and 'sneak into the cockpit' LOL!

Wew, a ride of history! Great noise from the engines, no new engine can beat the sound of the a good ol' piston pounder!

Take care!

Bas

I am GREEN to the gills with envy!!! Understatement!!! What an amazing experience for ~G~... and heading south for the Summer in a week or so! Hang on a minute... shouldn't it be fly North for the summer? Then again, with the weather in the UK at the moment, it's a case of fly anywhere but here, eh Dave?

One of my RAF tours - 2 tours - was at Coningsby, the second was after the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight - BBMF - had moved in: Spitfires, various; a couple of Hurricanes; Lancaster; DHC-1 Chipmunk for tailwheel conversion/continuation training... and a Dakota!!! Not just a museum/dis[lay aircraft, but still very much with a 'semi-operational' role, i.e., if something needs to go somewhere, the Dak's going that way and it fits... the Dak will take it!

I never got a go... but she still sounded fantastic especially if she taxyed past while we were doing 27MM preps in the Ready Use buildings... right next to the taxyway!!!

Happy Daze indeedy ;))

while she was on her climb out.....

Seemed the 'Green' cloud could be seen and smelled all the way up through the Northern Territories........
and it's rumored that the 'Sasquatch'....turned himself in....as a precaution.....lol

Of course no one was left alive to either confirm or deny........COUGH COUGH.....

I CAN'T BREEEATHHHHHHHH

Thanks for the update!

D'ya know, I saw the sepia pic and thought Foggy had sneaked one of his "tail" pics in!!

The noise on the video reminded me of the noise the spaceships used to make on the old Flash Gordon show I used to go see at the movies on a Saturday morning as a kid - anyone remember that?? Of course you do Jules - silly me! LOL!

Those engines in concert - what a beautiful noise!

And those pics - amazing curves - the dakota ain't bad either *winks* teehee!

Oh and GG, that birthday you mention, I sent a certain Captain a goodwill message a month early as I got my dates mixed up!! D'oh!

Hope everyone's week is goin well!

D from the UK :)

No ^J^... Not a 'Could not possibly...'

Our 27MM ammunition prep buildings were right next to the taxyway... and any BBMF wandering by would cause a work stoppage!!! The Griffon engined Spitfires were... amazing!!!! and the DAK motors were also pretty loud!!!

And a great job on the pics... I still thing a flying suit would be... 'interesting'!!!!! LOL whilst scooting for cover... catch youse all later!!!

... and yes Dave... I remember those Saturday mornings...!!! 6d to get in... Loony Toons, Bugs Bunny... Flash Gordon, silly tart he was!!! LOL... and usually a Western! and the old PC brigade would be in multiple constipation fits these days!!!

more Happy Saturdaze!!!!

Giulia said...

Thanks for the compliment, Dave! LOL! :) As for Foggy...flying suit? Really? ;)

Dave, I wasn't referring to HIS birthday...I was referring to Daniel's birthday coming up next week! Sneaky fellow trying to pass it by us.... :)

Captain Eric's birthday is coming up too, isn't it? Why do I think that?

I am so glad I recorded those video clips...I never want to forget the sounds of the engines "in concert" (love that expression!)

Oh and btw, I watched some of the shows I used to watch as a kid were the best! Too bad the PC police ruined it all!

getjets said...

Hey there Dave.......Dammit I have got to post a "Tail"......I just don't want to give up....being the "Tail Queen".....!!!!!!
Shame on me........LOL
So Dave.....how many hours are you putting in at the "W"....these days??????????

I think the Fog...wants to see you in one of those TIGHT Flying Suits......the kind that chokes off the air to the faux faux's..........in case of a sudden change in Cabin Pressure.........OH MY~~~~~~~~
Bad Bad Foggy.....LOL

"KaBooooom"

Great photo Giulia! (And nice of you Julie to put 'm up here!)

Who was so kind to make all the photo's?

The first pic looks vintage! (Not sure if I said something good now LOL) Keep it sepia, get it printed, get a frame for it and....hang it somewhere! (Toilet, stuff like that hehe)

So Capn'Aux turning fifteeehhh? Happy early birthday! My dad turned 50 in the beginning of this year and he's okay so you'll be fine! :)

Take care everyone!
Bas (Gave up all hope for the Dutch football team!)

Giulia said...

No problem with the VINTAGE comment. Or the TOILET comment....Toilet? Really?? LOL :)

*What should I expect when you hang around wise guys like us?*

The countdown to your trip begins...

:)

Hello to everyone else.

Wow G, what a freaking & exciting experience. Good for you topping up Cappie...heeheee! What a rush you must have had going on.

Miss T...fantastic job of putting it all together.

Thanks to both of you for sharing...loved it!

Bon :)

Giulia said...

Hi Bon!

Thanks for the lovely comment. Gosh, I didn't really set out to top anyone...this experience just presented itself to me. I don't think ANYONE of us would have turned it down (esp. if you're a geek).

Hope you are well. :)

capnaux said...

Haha thanks all, didn't mean to hijack this thread with my damn AGE! But thanks all the same :-)

Correction: Cappy/Samurai/Dodger et al (Jules u know too much about me lol!) turns 5-0 on the 18th!

BUT, party tomorrow night at my house (16th, PHX) and Y'ALL'RE INVITED!!!!

G: I HAVE flown in a DC-3--what a thrill!--but I haven't FLOWN one, lol!

J: I would have LOVED to FLY one commercially, back in the day when I was flying Twin Otters, which is slightly smaller capacity! But, more importantly, a DC-3 is one of the most important air machines in HISTORY!

Ryan O'Harren said...

Jealous, jealous, JEALOUS! (not of Cappie's age, BTW) but of such a wonderful experience. Fantastic memories by many I'm sure of "old fatso" (once again not directed to CaptnAux). Ha ha! Oh, and I'm not too far away from that Golden Age either come to think of it...

Ryan (ryanthepilot)

Giulia said...

LOL! When I read the comment of "ol' fatso", I ALMOST had to pull out the chalkbrush...(ask Foggy--he knows!) :)

And that would be hardly a way to welcome a guest! :)

Phew, you weren't referring to me! LOL!

This experience was memorable and I will treasure it for a long time. Thanks.
