Sweet post. Pan Am brings back memories. Years ago in an Air Force control tower at a base in Southeastern Nowhere, we'd occasionally get late night calls from either "Clipper One" or "Clipper Two" (Pan Am's radio callsign) as they flew eastward, high above us. They'd left an airport in Europe and were headed to somewhere in India (maybe Calcutta). The pilots would just call to chat, check on how we were doing and fill us in on some stateside news. It was nice hearing an American voice for a few minutes, coming from a cockpit high up in the night sky, reassuring us that civilization still existed. Then they were gone till next time. Pan Am and TWA ruled world travel back then.
