The DC8 Super 60 Series, to be exact, or "stretched" DC8s as we used to call them. These were the A340 of their day .. four engines, very long range (6,000 miles), high passenger capacity (200 - 220 pax) even though they were narrow-body planes (three seats, centre aisle, three seats). They were wildly popular with airlines, and a bunch of these planes continue to fly today as freighters.
There is also a short, non-stretched DC8 ("standard" DC8) that is the original airplane (stretch version came about later). Air Canada had both versions in its fleet, generally running the short ones on domestic trans-cons and the stretched birds on trans-Atlantic routes. CP Air, Eastern, United, KLM, and many other airlines did the same thing. See attached pix, taken in the 60s and 70s mainly from the roof of the old Toronto Terminal 1 (not by me, found them on Airliners.net). In the photo called AC DC8s you can see both versions side-by-side, the stretch job at front, the standard DC8 behind it. The old Trans Canada Airlines shot is a standard DC8. I've also included CP Air DC8s (standard and stretched).
DC8 was a great plane. Its closest competitor was the 707. Even though the 707 came out a year or two before the DC8, it still sold well. It was eventually replaced in passenger service by the 767, L-1011 and DC-10 - all of which were much quieter and far more fuel efficient.
These things used to smoke like crazy on take-off. Great sound too. See

There's only ONE left to do now................

Oh, thank you, Jules and Ritchie, for this morning's gift! I am excited to be able to look through each photo and video carefully today and "savour" them (as Paul Daniel would say).

So great to see your pic, Ritchie. I would have had that same...ahem..."shit eating grin" as you had. The Hamilton Airshow looks incredible!

Again, thank you for sharing this day with us, Craig. And thanks to Jules for putting this up on her blog.

Hey, great pics Ritchie!

It must have been a great show - from experience what you don't get from pics is the sounds of those wonderful piston engines in concert and the smells that waft across the runway (and I don't mean the hamburgers!!)

I know you are very busy so thanks so much for taking the time to think of us all and once again, thanks to Jules for being such a wonderful host!!

D from the UK :)

Whaow Craig! Those are some fine pics! Thanks to Julie for being abled to put this up! Indeed one hell of a community! :)

I wanted to say, since Blogger is being a b!tch (I will get punished for this haha), I made one hell of a huge comment on the birthday post you made for me and when I clicked 'Publish Comment' it took a couple of secs and 'poof' nothing happened! Thanks all for the birthday wishes, and Jules it is amazing you're abled to find so much cool stuff haha! Your pic vault must be bursting I bet.

Those old war birds must've sound great, the noisier the better :)

Take care everyone, weekend is just around the corner!

Bas (and sorry for being AFK so much)

P.S. Who's the Zebra at the top of the comments!? ;)

Giulia said...

Bas---what a brat! You like teasing your elders? HaHaHa!

Nice hearing from you again...I hope you've been enjoying your summer vacation.

Jules? How was Hump Day? Gotta headache from the drinks or did the power blackout at work give it to you first?

Well, yesterday I had fun slowly going through Ritchie's photos and watching the video clips. Craig, did you get to go inside any of those planes? Did you play in the cockpit like that little boy in the video? I woulda!

That show is a must-see for me next year! I just can't miss that opportunity again.

I really like that WestJet warplane taking off! ;))

Okay, time to start my day! Take care everyone!

((HUGS))

Thanks gang. The Hamilton air show really is a fun event. What's interesting is that you're out on the runways and on the tarmac .... and the airport is still open to normal passenger traffic. That Westjet 737 isn't part of the airshow - it's the afternoon flight to Edmonton. The air show was interrupted several times by commercial jets coming and going, which wasn't a bother at all - it was just more fun.

Can you only imagine the reaction of the passengers when they land, taxi to the terminal, and look out the windows to see 15,000 people waving at them? Must be totally surreal!

There are more pics ... that's only scratching the surface. It's a truly great event, and next year is the 40th anniversary. I can't wait to see what they come up with.

Craig R said...

Woops - forgot a few things.

Giulia: Yes, you can go aboard most of them. Ever sit in the pilot's seat of a Sabre jet? I have :-)

Bas - Loud isn't the word for it. NOTHING is as loud as hat B-25. Only twin engines, yet it totally drowns out the Lancaster and the B-29, as well as some of the jets. Man alive, it's just ear-splitting.

Dave - nothing beats the sound of a Merlin engine. The Lancaster sounds great with its four Merlins, but when you have it in flight with a Spitfire, a Hurricane and a couple of Mustangs alongside, it's like a symphony. Truly, music to my ears. Oh yeah, the smell of Jet A is also pretty heady stuff! Can do without the burnt rubber though.

Having a blast this vacation, work, sun, fun, couldn't be better. Plus, I'm meeting up with Ketty this Saturday. With quite some hassle I managed to get a day off so I'll be going to the Aviodrome in Lelystad (with the 74 Classic) where she will be staying in a hotel nearby.

Sorry I'm not around that much, I know I shouldn't be but oh well...

So, the Saints are playing!? :D There's not much football going on here... You watching the Olympics?

Take care and have a nice week!
