WOW.........!!!!
SR71 Blackbird Aircraft Engine,
US Air Force Aviation HistoryTitle: The Blackbird I
Artist: Justice Hyde
Date: 2011
Location: Cambridgeshire, UK

One of the most iconic aircraft ever to take to the sky, the Lockheed SR71 Blackbird last flew in service with the US Air Force in 1998, but still holds a number of speed records for manned flight. This image hints at the tremendously complex technology and engineering necessary to generate the Mach 3+ speeds the Blackbird's engines were capable of.

But the technology and also creates something quite beautiful...the intricate workings of the engine an exquisite and almost abstract labyrinth of metal, each pipe and valve and rivet a vital component of a perfectly constructed machine, but calling to mind also the organs, veins and arteries of a huge and powerful animal. The machine as body creating a reflection on the body as machine.

This is the famous "Gimli Glider" hich flew to a safe landing after fuel exhaustion over Manitoba, Canada, on July 23, 1983. It returned to service and flew for any years until it was retired to the desert in 2007. Mojave Airport, Mojave, California, May 30, 2009

Hi Jules,

I can't see the video you posted. It won't allow me to view it (location thingy). I did send you another video if you want to post. Plus...the boys on the bikes! They were interviewed years later.

Pretty amazing story, isn't it? Still gets me every time! <3

And yes, Cappy...I hope you NEVER have this kinda "There I wuz" post.

Thanks, Jules, for reminding me of this event.

Take care,

GG

Hi Jules,

Quite a coincidence, it was on TV yesterday. Still pretty amazing they pulled it off, when all those nice and colored screens go black in the cockpit.

They recreated the flight in a sim in Vancouver and none of the crews could land it... weird!

RAT! :) Ram Air Turbine, does the A320 have one Cap'n? I guess so...

Survived hump day? :P

Sweet! I've flown on the Gimli Glider, though (thankfully) not on that flight. As you noted, AC repaired it and used it on trans-cons for another 20-odd years, often on the YYZ-YVR route. It was a sad day when they retired her.

Can you imagine the pilots reaction to running out of fuel? Talk about two guys who definitely kept their cool, and did some truly amazing flying to bring it down like that. It's an amazing story.

Hi Cappy, Thanks for the compliment.....!!
There's No "Upstaging"....in Aviation......Just sharing.....!!!

Your current 'Post' about 2 of your fav places to visit, particularly "Telluride", CO..........makes me want to drop everything and go visit that 'Lovely place'....!!!......
Great Post, by the way......♠

Hey Bas Man.......Yep survived another 'Hump'....and managed to keep my friends too......LOL
I knew you would get the "bonus Quezzie"......right......course I only knew what it was, from watching the 'Gimlie' video...I had no idea there was such a thing......curious to learn more though....!!??.....do all commercial Jets have those...RAT's.......?????

So the "Gimlie" docu...was on day earlier....??
I pulled up a vid, I was considering showing on my blog...then I clicked the "Gimlie Glider"....and I was mesmerized.......!!
I had no idea.....how really 'Serious' and 'Dramatic' this event was.....!!!
Kinda cool......too,
was that you've done some 'gliding'....
with that 'high tech'..cheap ass piece of yarn taped to the windshield for guidance....LOL...

Later 'Comrade'....

Ritchie........You got that Right......!!!
Those Pilots showed "Grace under fire".......like nothing I've ever heard of.....!!!
To keep themselves together....and not...allow panic.....!!!

and just like the ATC fella said.....those who tried in the "SIM".....all crashed!!!
Ritchie, I bet you've flown in each of AC jets at least one time or another......as much flying as you do.......!!!!!
Cool, that you took a ride in the 'Gimlie'....too......

Also, what Captain Pearson said at the end of the 'documentary'....he knew...no matter what situation ....or circumstances......he would have to face in the future as a pilot......as long as the airplane was in one piece......He'll get it back on the ground......You can't buy that sort of Confinence......!!!

Thanks for stopping by....see ya around.....♠

Hi All!

The vid works here ok!

I have seen this episode many times (along with every other episode) it is called Air Crash Investigation over here in the UK.

They interview the actual FO in the programme I think, he comes accross as such a happy guy! (no surprise I guess!)

I think there was a fair amount of good fortune as well, hadn't one of the crew trained at Gimli and that knowledge no doubt saved many lives that day......

Jules, I sent you one of my fav RAT pics, hope you get it ok!

Great to hear from Ritchie, the prodigal fisherman!

Take care all!

D from the UK :)

HI DAVE.......
Yes...Yes........I got the pic'ie of the RAT..........and it's in MissTWA's house........so to speak...........;)))))

I Love when we all make a 'Connection'...I had just wondered on to the 'Gimlie Glider' video.......I had never seen it completely........after, I had to post....What a story....!!......
So.......DAVE......

YOU DIRTY RAT.....YOU COME BACK REAL SOON.........OK........!!!

Dave,

Gimli was an old Canadian Air Force base, and the FO was at one time based there. Captain happened to be a recreational glider pilot on weekends. Talk about having exactly the right two guys in the cockpit on a given day!

I am not certain, but I believe the original flight crew were on board for the Glider's final flight from AC's base in Montreal to the desert. Pictures of it doing a very low level, wheels-up pass as a touching buh-bye can be seen here (sorry, you'll have to copy and paste):

Thank you, Ritchie...for finding these..."Lovely"......pictures of her last flight.....!!!!
I put the link here on the blog.......for easy access to those who visit......♠

Talk about your..."Best" case scenrio,
of the "Worser" than usual "Worst" case scenerio......!!!!!!!!!
We all have times in our livies, where we are faced....with 'Unbelievable' Challenges......
but it does seem...
There are those few, who are made to show their "Metal"....to such a degree.....
they couldn't possibly beat such horrific odds........who haven't got a 'Prayer'....to pull through.....

and maybe there's the 'Irony'....We all have the'Prayer'...but must have the "FAITH"... as well........???!!!

and be that example/inspiration..... to the rest of us.....
No matter the circumstance.....you can pull through......♦
Who can doubt that reasoning...
Thanks again, Ritchie........
