Jules!

Thank you for posting this! I was so excited about this presentation Captain Pearson was making...I went all by myself!

The auditorium was packed with former and present-day pilots...and then there was me. I kinda stuck out like a sore thumb.

Captain Pearson gave us a lot of the back stories to this event--just what I was hoping to hear.

And he is really funny! Such a genuinely kind man.

And are you a pilot, in aviation, a student? Nope. Just a avigeek.

I did us proud, Jules. LOL

Again, thanks for using up hours searching your "mainframe" (hahah...who says that anymore)
to put together this post.

I really wish you were there with me. We would've hogged all his time.

Actually, we probably would've been escorted out by security...museum security. Ha ha ha...

Thank you, Mark. I'm happy that you enjoyed this history lesson. You can go now...RECESS!

xox to everyone else.

P.S. JULES---What is with that pic at the end?!?!?! *laughing* It's HUGE!!!!

This is lovely! I get your "Stuck out like a sore thumb" comment 100%, last year I signed up to an open day at a nearby flight training centre in Southampton where they train new recruits to the airline industry (I was hoping to get a go on one of their simulators - and did!!). The hall was full of pimply 17 and 18 year olds and their parents - and me....

I've given up caring and embrace my geek side - Lu says "he's gone to get his geek on!"

Thanks for sharing Jules - hope you're feeling better

All the best! :)

The Gimli Glider was of course repaired and flew with AC for another 20-odd uneventful years before its retirement. That says a lot about how gently the Capt and FO put that bird down in Gimli. In fact, I recall that several passengers said they've experienced rougher landings!!

I have flown on the Gimli Glider a couple of times, as it was often assigned to the YYZ-YVR route I fly every few weeks (I confess to being such a plane geek that I actually keep a spreadsheet in my laptop, and try to record the fin number and registration of every plane I fly on. It's amazing how often you wind up on the same birds). It always felt special to walk up to the gate and see 604 waiting at the end of the ramp.

Thanks for putting that together. Its a nice trip down memory lane :-)

Hi Dave! I remember you mentioning how you weren’t like the others at the flight training center and that you felt a "little" outta place. I like your attitude—and I will (from now on) "get my geek on" PROUDLY!

How many days ‘til the trip (like you’re NOT counting)?

CRAIG!!! So nice to hear from you again! Hope you are doing well in work and in life. :)
I knew if you ever saw this, you would like it! Why do I remember you saying that you flew on the Gimli Glider? How awesome!!!!

And I know that you, too—like Dave—embrace the geek. Ha ha…you with your spreadsheet.
Any other special fin numbers?
I’m glad that you enjoyed Julie’s post. She was sweet to put it together.
And gosh, so NICE to hear from you…
Every time I read about a boat show, I think of you.
Take care, sir.

Giulia,

Thanks for the kind words! Nice to hear from you too.

There are some fins that do stand out for me, and for different reasons. In the past I think I've mentioned Air Canada's fin 264, which is an A319 that's painted in the old Trans Canada Airlines livery. I've flown on that jet many times, including one instance when I had it twice in the same week.

Fin 645 is a 767-300 that was at one time painted with a huge eagle along each side. The plane was named Free Spirit, and was the one that started my fin spreadsheet! I haven't seen in in a long time though (November 19, 2012, to be exact.) But it's still out there somewhere. I've also had that one twice in the same week of travel.

Fin 632 is a 767-300 that has almost become my personal jet. I don't need to look at the spreadsheet to know I have flown that bird a LOT over the past several years, mainly back and forth between Toronto and Vancouver. But if I do look it up, I can see I've also had it on flights between YYZ and MUC, FRA, ICN, YUL, YHZ, LAX, MIA, YOW, YEG, and the list goes on. My spreadsheet isn't set up to provide totals on different fins (new project!) but '32 just seems to show up at the gate on a fairly regular basis. And since I always select the same seats (14A on a 767 ... never select the first row (12) as you don't have underseat storage ahead of you and the overhead space is a wee bit smaller … and never take row 13 in the '67 because it doesn't have a window) I have spent many, many hours not just in the same pane, but in the very same spot! Only a true plane geek (or frequent flier) would appreciate that, and not think it completely weird.

The fin I'm most looking forward to is 801, which will be AC's first 787-800, joining the fleet in March. AC has said it will break the 787 in on domestic transcons (YYZ-YVR and YUL-YVR) to get ground staff and crews acquainted with it, before they roll it out on international routes. While I’ll be pleased to experience the new plane, I’m honestly quite apprehensive about the new seating. What I’ve seen of it so far does't impress me one bit — they’re the new Slimline seats (which are quite uncomfortable), and they seem to be really packed in there. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

Hi Craig!!

Way to go! You have just royally out-geeked the lot of us!! LOL!

I get to spend 11 hours in the cheap end of a 787 for the first time next month for 11 hours, LGW-MLE..

I guess each airline picks its own seating but I'll let you know about the comfort!

Great to hear from you

D from the UK

Craig--I say this in the most endearing way--WHAT A GEEK! :))))

I have heard some people complain about the new seating arrangements and the quality of these new seats.

Kinda scary...makes you think twice about flying long distances. Or making sure you have enough money to afford "fancy pants" seats.

Good luck with your new geek project (spreadsheet totals). I wanna see some pie graphs while you're at it. ;)

Dave--11 hours on a 787. Boo hoo...no one feels sorry for you. That would be my dream! And your destination is pure HEAVEN.

:)

((HUGS)) to you both. And where's Jules?

GG
